The year of 1319 of the Higra Calendar (1899 A.D) marked the beginning of a new era for the Arabian Peninsula when the late Abdul Aiz Bin Abdul Rehman Al Saud unified the different parts to establish the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

Born on October 19 1897, Dr.Salimuzzaman Siddiqui obtained his Doctorate degree from Germany in 1927. He was the founder member of the Pakistan Academy of Sciences, Chairman of the drafting committee of the Pakistan Science Commission, Chairman of the Pakistan Council of Science & Technology, Director Institute of Chemistry and the founder of Hussain Ibrahim Institute of Chemistry. He was elected as a fellow of the Royal Society of London in 1961. He published over 400 research papers. He died in 1994.

On May 28, 1998 Pakistan responded to India's nuclear test and joined the prestigious club of seven nuclear powers. It is one of the most momentous days in the history of Pakistan.This feat was the result of dynamic political and scientific leadership. These tests invigorated the national faith in the future and belied rumor mongers. It raised Pakistan strategic status in the comity of nations and signified the principle of self reliance. The nuclear test enabled Pakistan to attain strategic parity with India and helped to internationalize the core dispute of Jammu & Kashmir.

Accomplished Sufi master and revered intellectual Syed Ali bin Usman al- Hajvery (Hazrat Data Gang Bakhsh) settled in Lahore during 11th century. He propagated the religious, spiritual, moral and educational dimensions of Islam in South Asia. The shrine of Data Sahib is visited round the clock by the devotees from all over the country. The government embarked upon an ambitious two phase expansion plan of the shrine in 1978. The second phase began in 1997 under the direction of the prime minister is complete. The mosque is now spread over a total of 3,68,150 sq. ft. and is the third largest mosque in Pakistan. It could accommodate upto 52,600 devotees.

The young prince Siddharatha left his palace in search of enlightenment and practised for six years such severe austerities and intense mental concentration that his beautiful body withered away to skin and bones. Ultimately he attained enlightenment at the age of thirty five and became known as the Buddha - "The enlightened one". This resolve was illustrated for the first time in Gandhara art. This so called statue of Fasting Siddharatharanks not only as the finest specimen of Gandhara Art, but also as one of the rarest antiquities of the earliest world.

The first "Geneva Convention" (conditions of the wounded in the field) was adopted in 1864. This was followed by important developments in 1907 (protection of combatants wounded at sea), 1929 (protection of prisoners of war). On August 12, 1949 the four Geneva conventions were adopted for the protection of wounded and sick in both armed forces and civilians. In 1977 two more protocols were added to the 1949 Geneva Conventions. Combined together they form the core of International humanitarian law today.

Chaudhry Muhammad Ali (1905-1980)
Civil Servant by profession, Chaudhery Muhammad Ali was one of the very few Muslims who rose to the highest ranks in the civil service during the raj. In the Interim government of 1946 the famous "poor man's budget" presented by Liquat Ali Khan was entirely prepared by him. After partition he was appointed the first secretary general of Pakistan. He later entered into politics eventually becoming the Prime Minister. The first ever constitution was adopted under his leadership. His book "The Emergence of Pakistan" is a monumental work on the Pakistan Movement.
Sir Adamjee Haji Dawood (1880-1949)
Gifted with immense business acumen, Sir Adamjee began his business career at the age of 15. In 1923 he established a match factory followed by a jute mill in Calcutta in 1927. A close friend of Quaid-i-Azam, he was appointed Treasurer and Financial Advisor of Muslim League. To confront Hindus domination in key industries he established the Muslim Commercial Bank and Orient Airways-predecessor of PIA- in collaboration with M.A.H Ispahani. He handed over a signed blank cheque to the Quaid when the Government was in dire financial strait at the time of partition.
Maulana Abdul Hamid Badayuni (1898-1970)
Maulana Badayuni was a religious scholar and renowned leader of Pakistan movement. His association with the Muslim League dated back to 1918. In March 1940 he spoke in favour of Lahore Resolution at Minto Park and later toured length and breadth of India to popularise the idea. He organized an All India Sunni Conference at Banaras in 1946 to mobilize support for Pakistan. He also served as the president of Jamiat-i- Ulama-i Pakistan.

Although a qawal (mystic singer), Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan can truly be described as one of the greatest musical prodigies of our times. He is the pioneer of an individualistic style which blended classical music with contemporary music. Since his debut in 1965 he distinguished himself as a great qawal. He was also famous for his unparalleled repertoire. He was awarded the President's Pride of Performance in 1987. His performance at the World Music arts and Dance festival in London in 1985 and his concerts in Paris 1985 and 1988 were received with great enthusiasm. His various appearances and concerts in Japan steadily increased number of his fans in this country.

The IDB is a multilateral financial institution with 54 countries of the Organization of the Islamic Conference as its members. The Jeddah (Saudi Arabia) based bank was inaugurated on 20th October 1975. It provides an institutional arrangement for economic and financial cooperation among Islamic countries. It has financed about 3000 operations involving more than $20 billion. For least developed countries, the Bank has set up a special account with a capital of $ 150 million. The Bank's financing mode based on the Islamic Shari'ah includes grants, interest free loans, profit sharing, equity participation, leasing murabaha, installment sale, istisna'a and technical assistance.

People's Republic of China appeared on the map of the world on October 1, 1949 when Mao Zedong, Chairman of the Central People's Government proclaimed the founding of People's Republic of China at Tian'anmen square in Beijing in the presence of some 300,000 people. This was the culmination of glorious struggle under the dynamic leadership of Mao Zedong.
Chou En Lai was the chief architect of new China's foreign policy. He was able to gain China's rightful place in UN Security Council besides overseeing a thaw in US-China relations which eventually culminated in the visit of US president Richard Nixon in 1972. In this historic reconciliation, Pakistan role was crucial.
Deng Xiao Ping was the chief architect of China's economic reform and modernization drive. Special economic zones were established in 1980 followed by opening of 14 coastal cities to attract overseas investment in 1984. Today, the People's Republic of China is an emerging economic giant in Asia.

The Asian Sailing Championship launched in 1981, is held every alternate year. Pakistan has the privilege to host the 9th Asian sailing champion shipn from September 24-30 this year.
Five major international classes are extensively sailed in Pakistan. A brief detail is enumerated below:
Enterprise
It is a British design boat which is famous for having Blue sails. Two persons are required to sail the boat. It is a national class.
470 A
French boat which is 470 CM long. It has three sails and require two persons to sail. It is an Olympic class
Laser
Laser is a single handed British boat. It is an Olympic class.
Mistral
An extremely difficult to handle Olympic class, the boat comes under the category of surfing boards.
Optimist
An international boat being the most popular class amongst children. The class was started in 1988 by Pakistan Sailing Federation. This is a boat for children under 15 years of age.

The first Optimist was built in 1948. It was later renamed as the International Optimist Dinghy. It spread throughout Europe in the 1960's and Asia, Africa and Latin America in 1970's. In 1973 the class received international status from the sailing governing body. Today, the Optimist is the world's largest and fastest growing sailing class. The International Optimist is the only Dinghy recognized by International Sailing Federation for young people under 16 years of age.

On October 9, 1874 the Treaty of Berne, establishing the "General Postal Union" was signed by the representatives of twenty two nations. The Treaty of Berne unified a conflicting international maze of postal services and regulations into a single postal territory for the reciprocal exchange of letter post items. Within the single postal territory the freedom of transit of letter post item was guaranteed and multitude of rates for mail were reduced to a single rate.
Membership in the Union grew so quickly that the name was changed to the Universal Postal Union in 1878. The UPU became a specialized agency of the United Nations on July 1, 1948.

Hakim Mohammed Said the great herbalist, physician, scholar and researcher fell to an assassin's bullet on October 17 1998. He is credited for promoting the Tib-e-Mashraq (Eastern Medicine). His untiring efforts led WHO to accept it as an Alternate Medicine. His Madinat al-Hikmah- the city of education, science and culture is a living symbol of all he stood for.

Established in 1949, the government controlled National Bank of Pakistan has played a unique role both as a commercial bank and as a trustee of public finances. Operating through a network of 1445 domestic and 23 Overseas branches it has been at the forefront of national economic development. Its contribution in the development of small and medium size entrepreneurs is significant. It is credited with introducing such innovative schemes as People's Credit Scheme (1960), supervised agricultural credit programme (1972). and educational loans on on compassionate grounds.

The Shell began its operation in this region in 1899 by importing Kerosene from Azerbaijan. In 1970 Burma Shell divested 51% to the public and became a listed company. After acquisition in 1993 it was finally renamed as Shell Pakistan. With annual sale approaching $ 1 billion, Shell is one of the leading private sector companies in Pakistan and holds about 22% share of hydro-carbon business. It employs over 12000 persons in Pakistan and operates through a retail net work of 1100 petrol pumps. Being a responsible corporate organization The Shell has so far contributed over Rs.30 million in community development in Pakistan.

On November 20, 1989 the Convention on the Rights of the Child was adopted by the UN General Assembly and it entered into force in 1990 after being ratified by 20 countries. The Convention spells out the range of rights that children everywhere are entitled to. Countries that ratify the convention agree to be legally bound by its provision. The Convention on the Rights of the Child contains 54 articles, each of which details a different type of Right. Four broad categories of the document are survival rights, development rights, protection rights and participation rights.

Founded in June 1974, Allama Iqbal Open University became the first institution of distance learning in the region.
The University provides opportunity to those who wish to acquire formal education or upgrade skills while staying in their homes. The use of appropriate media mix and latest electronic communication techniques allow an expert to reach out to student scattered all over country. Student is taught with the help of printed course books, media programmes and tutorials. He has to do assignments and pass final examination. During 1998-99 the University enrollment reached 9,07,834.

Date of Issue (December 5, 1999)
Born on December 05 1898 in Maliabad, Shabbir Hassan Khan Josh acquired early education in Lucknow and passed Senior Cambridge from St. Peters College Agra in 1924.
He was the greatest revolutionary poet of pre independence period. Some of his revolutionary poems were even broadcast from German Radio during Second World War. After independence the Indian government conferred upon him the highest literary award.
Josh migrated to Pakistan in 1956, initially stayed at Karachi and later moved to Islamabad. He also remained associated with Urdu Dictionary Board and Ministry of Information. He died on February 22 1982. He left more than 25 literary works.

Dr. Muhammad Afzal Hussain was a renowned Researcher, Philosopher and Academician. He was a founder fellow of the Zological Society of Pakistan. He obtained Ph.D. degrees from Aligarh Muslim University and Cambridge University. He introduced a number of new concepts in the field of insect morphology. He was elected fellow of several international and national academic bodies. He was awarded President Gold Medal for outstanding teacher in 1969.
